Remain stationary while using your arms to defend yourself

Remaining stationary while using your arms to defend yourself is a crucial skill to learn. As a victim, your attacker is coming toward you with their arms extended, trying to wrap them around you. Instead of letting him or her do that, you should grab your left wrist with your right hand and lock it out. Meanwhile, your right arm should remain bent. Shooting your hips back will lengthen your body and make it harder for your attacker to control you.

Avoid turning your back on the attacker

There are several ways to defend yourself against a knife attack, but the most important one is to face the attacker. This may seem simple, but many untrained individuals turn their back on the attacker or move away from them, only to get sliced in the side or back. Instead of turning around and facing the attacker, maintain a three-quarter stance. This basic ready position keeps your body and weapon in clear view, allowing you to prepare mentally and physically for a fight.

If the attacker turns their back on you, turn around and look at the attacker. If you are unable to run away, strike the attacker in the throat and eyes. If you can, call 911 immediately. If this is not possible, keep your distance. By keeping your distance, you will give yourself more time to react if the attacker is on your tail. If you are unable to move away, you may have to stay in the area until the attacker backs off.

Blocking and striking at the same time

If you’re thinking of surviving a knife attack, then the first thing to understand is that these attacks aren’t broad sweeping strokes or single thrusts. Instead, they’re quick, repetitive stabs, switching between chest, neck and upper arms. These attacks, known as ‘prison shanking’ or’sewing machine’ attacks, leave little room for blocking and deflecting.

Blocking the blade isn’t enough – you need to strike at the same time. Blocking with the knife will make your arm wet, making you an easy target. Remember, your attacker may not be trying to cut you, so incidental slashes are debilitating. Using your footwork and blocking at the same time will help you generate more power for your strikes.

Emergency treatment for stab/slash wounds

If you are the victim of a knife attack, you should immediately seek emergency treatment for stab/slash wounds. Stabbing wounds are particularly serious and can be life-threatening. This requires quick action, and you should remain calm and level-headed while administering first aid. This will help control bleeding and save the victim’s life. In addition, if you wait until the assailant has fled, you may end up rescuing more victims than you originally thought.

While awaiting emergency treatment, you must apply direct pressure to the wound and monitor ABCs. If the victim is unconscious, perform CPR. After completing CPR, start cleaning the wound. As soon as the bleeding is under control, call an ambulance. Emergency personnel will clean the wound. If you are alone, make sure you lift your legs to reduce the impact. A victim must be kept warm and dry to prevent shock and prevent further bleeding.
